The Sinn Féin Team in the Assembly today held a solidarity event for the people of Gaza on the steps of Stormont.
Sinn Féin Chief Whip Carál Ní Chuilín said,
"Today's event was a small symbol of our solidarity with the besieged people in Gaza. As we return to the Assembly today, it is of vital importance that the calls for a ceasefire and for inclusive negotiations are echoed here at Stormont.
"Sinn Féin has submitted a no day named motion on the issue of Gaza and we will continue to highlight the terrible events taking place there, as well as continuing to call for an end to the war and peace for all those people suffering at present."
In response DUP MLA Robin Newton has put out a ridiculous press release claiming that the protest this morning and the one in Belfast on Saturday had "an ugly undercurrent of anti-Semitism" and he blames the entire conflict in Gaza on Hamas.
.
Robin Newton would do well to recognise that many Israeli and Jewish people are equally opposed to what the Israeli government is doing to the Palestinian people and I myself have worked with Jewish and Israeli citizens in the past to highlight the inhumane conditions that people have to live in in the West Bank.
.
The Israeli Army and Israeli state have no problem with killing Palestinian civilians, Ambulance workers and anyone who gets in the way of the IDF. They have no problem with it because they are not being taken to task for their actions and will not be taken to task whilst Robin Newton and other politicians continue to turn a blind eye to such massacres.
